Grace White, the infant daughter of Charles W. and Lucy J. White, was born and died on March 12, 1891. The Whites lived near Ash Grove from the 1880s through at least the early 1900s. In the 1900 U.S. Census, the Whites reported that four of Lucy's five children were living. Presumably, Grace was the child no longer living in 1900 (Russel 2012). Charles White worked as a fireman and supervisor at the Ash Grove lime kilns from the early 1880s through at least the early 1900s. Charles likely supervised other Black employees, but probably not white employees. Newspaper articles from 1894 report that some white employees protested when the Ash Grove White Lime Association promoted Charles to the position of supervisor. Despite the opposition, Charles retained the supervisory position for at least eight years (The Springfield Democrat Sept. 11, 1894; Ash Grove White Lime 1901 and 1902 Employee Time Books on file at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Missouri State University).
